Questions
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Tax = total × rate ÷ (100 + rate). For example, the VAT in 120 at 20% is 120 × 20 ÷ 120 = 20, so the amount before VAT is 100.
Why is removing 20% not the same as subtracting 20%?
Because the tax was calculated on the smaller, pre-tax amount. Subtracting 20% of the total removes too much.
