When to convert WebP to JPG
WebP is a modern image format made by Google. Websites use it because the files are small and load fast. The problem starts when you save an image: some photo apps, older software, printers, marketplaces and job or government upload forms still only accept JPG or PNG. Converting to JPG solves that in a few seconds.
- Keep the quality at about 90% to make the JPG look the same as the WebP. Lower it to 75% if you need a smaller file.
- Set a maximum width if a form has a size limit. 1,200 pixels is plenty for most uses.
- Converting many images? Convert one first to check the quality, then repeat with the same settings.
Common mistakes
- Renaming the file instead of converting it. Changing "photo.webp" to "photo.jpg" does not change the format inside the file, and many apps will refuse to open it. Convert it properly.
- Losing a transparent background. JPG cannot be transparent, so logos and stickers get a white background. Use Image converter and choose PNG to keep transparency.
- Using images you do not have the right to use. Converting an image does not change its copyright. Only reuse images you own or have permission to use.
Examples
Product photo for a marketplace: you saved your own product photo from your website and it downloaded as WebP. Convert it to JPG at 90% so the marketplace accepts it.
Printing a photo: many printing kiosks and services only take JPG. Convert first, then print.
Adding an image to a document: older versions of Word and some PDF tools cannot insert WebP. Convert to JPG, then insert it, or turn it into a PDF with JPG to PDF.
