How to create a WhatsApp QR code for your business

4 min read · Updated October 2026

A WhatsApp QR code lets customers start a chat with you instantly: they scan it with their phone camera and WhatsApp opens with your number, and optionally a message, ready to send. It's perfect for shop counters, flyers, delivery boxes, invoices and business cards.

How it works

WhatsApp supports "click to chat" links in the form wa.me/ followed by your full international phone number, digits only, with no plus sign, spaces or leading zero. For example, the US number (555) 123-4567 becomes wa.me/15551234567, and the UK number 07700 900123 becomes wa.me/447700900123. A QR code simply contains that link.

Create one in a minute

  1. Open the QR code generator and choose WhatsApp.
  2. Enter your number with country code. DocNova removes spaces and symbols for you.
  3. Optionally add a pre-filled message such as "Hi, I'd like a price list".
  4. Scan the preview with your own phone to test it, then download PNG (for screens) or SVG (for printing).

Ideas for using it

  • Print it on invoices and delivery notes so customers can reorder or ask questions.
  • Put it on your shop counter with "Scan to order on WhatsApp".
  • Add different pre-filled messages for different products, so you know what a customer is asking about.

Printing tips

  • Print at least about 2.5 cm wide; bigger for posters.
  • Keep a dark code on a light background.
  • Write your business name next to it, so customers know it's genuine.

DocNova QR codes contain the link directly, so they never expire and scans aren't tracked. See also: more QR code ideas for small businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The link works for both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business numbers.

What if the customer doesn't have WhatsApp?

The link opens a WhatsApp web page that invites them to install the app or use WhatsApp Web, so it's worth printing your phone number as well.

Can I change the message later?

The message is stored inside the QR code, so a new message needs a new code. Codes are free, so make as many as you need.

Install DocNova
